More than 32,000 Connecticut residents – including nearly 19,000 children – have recently lost SNAP because of federal cuts and changes.

The State of Connecticut recently announced that the state would begin distributing one-time, $300 electronic grocery cards to people who have lost SNAP because of federal work requirements. The cards will be distributed by the state's Community Action Agencies.

This will help some people for a little while. But groceries are expensive, and $300 won't go far. More people are going to lose SNAP. And Connecticut needs to do more to help.

What to know:

• Available for any individual in a Connecticut household who lost SNAP after December 1, 2025 due to new federal work requirements (known as "ABAWD," or "able-bodied adults without dependents" work requirements). If you were able to re-enroll in SNAP, you are not eligible.

• $300 one-time electronic grocery card for food

• Available per person who lost SNAP, not per household

• People can apply to receive one from their local Community Action Agency

• Approximately 25,000 electronic cards available

• Electronic card is through the Akimbo app — a limited number will be available as physical cards.
