DEMOCRACY

Democracy & good governance

Connecticut thrives when people are the driving force behind our democracy.

Fostering strong communities through good governance

We believe that working families, who have been historically excluded from the halls of power, deserve to have an active voice in our democracy and should have the power to shape what our state and local governments do. We’re in the fight alongside people across Connecticut, and with you, we’re building momentum and relationships to mobilize our families and friends for fair, accessible, and thriving communities.

That’s why The Connecticut Project uncovers data to better inform decisionmakers and programs about what is and isn’t working. We also work to empower grassroots efforts, and we canvass and build community throughout the state, placing the power of change in the hands of the people who know what their communities need. Our government needs to listen to the needs of working class and middle class people, and it must be easier for working and middle class people to have a say.

How we're making your voice heard

Making it easier to vote

When Connecticut began to allow early voting in 2024, The Connecticut Project educated voters about their right to vote early, so that everyone could cast their ballots at a time that worked for them. More than 740,000 people chose to vote early in the 2024 general election – making up 43% of all votes.

Investing in data to guide decisions

Data can be a powerful building block for change. The Connecticut Project has invested in the Connecticut Data Collaborative, Yale University’s Tobin Center, DataHaven, the Migration Policy Institute, and others to create opportunity for everyone. For example, in 2023, our investment in data helped to introduce the idea of using SNAP eligibility to help automatically enroll Connecticut residents in Medicaid – a change that could connect 81,000 more people to critical healthcare coverage.

Empowering communities to take action

Making the government more accessible for low-income and asset-limited people starts from the ground up. The Connecticut Project has made multi-year investments in FaithActs for Education, a Black-led, non-denominational nonprofit that trains leaders to mobilize campaigns. We’ve also invested in A Better Way Foundation to empower leaders to stand up for issues that matter to their communities. We and our sister organization, The Connecticut Project Action Fund, also work throughout the state to build community power.
