The Earned Income Tax Credit can boost your budget for fun
Treat yo’self with your refund
You’ve worked hard for the Earned Income Tax Credit. And while many people have told us they plan to use their refund to pay bills, buy groceries, and get rid of debt, it’s also a chance to spend money on something you normally wouldn’t have the budget for.
C., in Ellington, plans to use her refund for a vacation.
“I would love to visit national parks and go to Alaska,” she told us.
If you qualify, and how much money you can put back in your pocket, depends on your income and if you have dependents. You can receive about $650 if you’re single with no dependents, and up to about $8,000 if you have them, according to the IRS. According to the IRS, the average Connecticut EITC filer got back $2,482 in the 2024 tax season.
The EITC is money that you’ve worked for and the government owes you. However, you have to claim it for the government to give it back. We’ve partnered with FreeTaxUSA, an IRS-certified service, so you can file for free to get what you’re owed.
The EITC boosts your budget so you can do or buy what you’ve had your eye on. Debra, in Ansonia, plans to buy new furniture, while Lydia, in Killingly, will use it to throw a birthday party.
We’ve also heard from people who plan to use their EITC to:
- Go on vacation
- Send kids to basketball camp
- Buy gifts for family members
- Pay for prom and a graduation party
Open up more money in your budget with the EITC. You’ve worked for it. You deserve every dollar the government owes you.
