From door knock to action: Neighbors come together for change

Hear how people like you are getting involved to make Connecticut affordable

Christina Diaz thought she was opening the door for a food delivery driver. What she found instead were two organizers with The Connecticut Project, and they started to talk.

That initial 20-minute conversation led her to a community chapter meeting with 50 other people who want a more affordable Connecticut. From there, she found a way to act on the issues she’s passionate about and a community dedicated to making our state work for working people.

Recently, she spoke at The Connecticut Project’s first statewide community call, where she let people know that they could make a difference, too.

“I left the chapter meeting feeling so empowered that I have joined the organization, getting out there and hitting the pavement and making a difference for the people of Connecticut,” she said during the community call. “So, organizing isn’t just about meetings or flyers. It’s knocking on a neighbor’s door you have never spoken to, just to say, ‘Hey, we deserve better.’ It’s showing up for someone else even if you’re tired. It’s knowing that we are stronger when we act together than when we act alone. And it reminds me that change isn’t just possible, it’s personal. It starts with us.”

During the call, leaders like Christina discussed what the movement is doing, neighbors met each other, and supporters learned more about the work being done to make our state a place where everyone has the freedom to thrive.

Diaz said community chapters empower neighborhoods to find solutions.

“It’s about looking around at everything that feels unfair or broken, and I am sure we can all relate no matter your background, your job, your income, which political party you side with, that things have been unfair to us,” she said. “Organizing is building something out of nothing, and I am sure we all have felt that at one point, that we were never heard when voicing our concerns about what is going on in Connecticut.”

Christina is just one of the thousands of people across Connecticut who are taking action for working class and middle class people, to build opportunity for everybody.
