Mathias is the Engagement and Mobilization Manager at The Connecticut Project. His responsibilities include developing and implementing a program focused on building power and presence in local communities by recruiting, cultivating, training, and mobilizing a statewide network of grassroots supporters and leaders that engage in social action and deep canvassing to inform The Connecticut Project’s priorities and cultivate local leadership.
Mathias joins The Connecticut Project with a decade of experience working in the community organizing and field campaign space, specifically in the fields of racial justice, housing and climate justice. Prior to joining The Connecticut Project, Mathias served as the Senior National Organizing Program Manager for The Center for Popular Democracy, where he developed and managed a national organizing program responsible for the training, coaching and development of the groups state-based partners’ organizing programs.
Why do you do “the work?”
We live in a world where not every person has the freedom, or even the opportunity to survive, let alone thrive. I have spent my career organizing communities and people to attempt to shift that reality, specifically for those most marginalized and forgotten. I believe in the power of the collective voice and that power starts at the local level with me and my neighbors.
What are some specific places or things you love in Connecticut?
I think Connecticut never gets enough appreciation for its natural beauty. Some of my favorite places to go are Silver Sands State Park and Sleeping Giant State Park for a good hike. My top places to eat at are Rawley’s for a good hot dog and The Clam Castle for some fried seafood.
