Join us in the push for an affordable Connecticut
Are you ready to get to work to make Connecticut more affordable? Taking part in a community canvass is a way to learn more about your neighbors, get more people involved with the fight for change, and empower yourself.
We’re excited for you to join us! If this is your first time canvassing, here is what you can expect.
Why do we canvass?
Canvassing is a way to listen to people, and for more people to share their stories about what matters most to them and what Connecticut should do to make our state work for working class people. Right now, for instance, neighbors are canvassing in towns across our state to talk to people about affordability – to really listen to people about what their biggest expenses and budget stresses are, and what can be done to make our state more affordable. We use what we learn to drive ideas and policies, and most importantly, we use it to bring people together.
Community canvasses empower people to make change. We are better together. But, we have to put in the work to make progress happen.
We’ll give you the tools you need
If you’re canvassing with us, you won’t be alone.
Once you arrive, you will be greeted by your community leader, asked to sign in, and given a name tag. You may receive a shirt. If you have already been given one, be sure to wear it!
Your group will be given an overview of how the team canvasses, hear safety tips, and learn how to talk to people at their doors. You’ll have the chance to practice a basic script and how to respond to people. Training will be given in both English and Spanish.
You will be assigned a “turf” and given a list of where to go. You will have a buddy – no one will be knocking doors alone. We will give you door hangers, a script to guide your conversations, and other materials you will need.
Afterwards, we’ll meet again to talk about how it went. Expect to spend a total of three hours at a community canvass.
What to bring
Wear comfortable shoes and clothes that fit the weather. We canvass during all seasons and in different weather conditions – a little snow or rain isn’t going to stop us! If we’ve previously given you a shirt at another event, please wear it. You’ll also want to bring a water bottle.
Can kids come?
We do not recommend canvassing with young children. You may be crossing busy streets, and we want to keep everyone safe. However, older children and teenagers are welcome, as long as they have a guardian with them.
Child care is available at select community events. Check with your community leader to learn more.
